His relative (sister) under investigation

His sister, Justice Nirmal Yadav of Punjab and Haryana High Court, has been formally accused of corruption, destruction of evidence, and fabrication of evidence. She has become the first judge of a High Court in India to be chargesheeted while still in office.[3]

A co-accused, a lawyer, has been accused of sending Rs.1.50 million cash to her under mysterious circumstances for showing favours to a businessman in a legal case pending the court. It so happened that the courier delivered the cash to the house of another judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court by mistake because her first name was also Nirmal. The other judge complained to the police that cash had been delivered to her house on behalf of a lawyer. The lawyer and Justice Nirmal Yadav were investigated by police and CBI and a prima facie case made out against her when the lawyer admitted that he had sent the cash for Justice Nirmal Yadav.

Thereafter she was investigated by a committee of judges formed by the Chief Justice of India. It is alleged that she tried to scuttle the probe by not appearing before the judges. The Chief Justice of India, Justice SH Kapadia recommended her prosecution. The President of India sanctioned her prosecution[4] and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a case against her in a court of law before she retired.[5]

She tried not to appear before the trial court but Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected her plea. Currently she is out on bail after furnishing a bond on 27 August 2011.[6]
